| do
something small. be bigger.
I've pretty much had it.
A friend of mine was ranting that the federal government hadn't
done more to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. She actually
believes the big corporations are going to step up to offer
food, resources, shelter.
There are millions of people in this country living in extreme
poverty - millions living on the street without shelter, food,
clothing, medical help. No one cares about them as national
policy (and this is not just our current regime). We don't
even have national health care. This is not indicative of
a country that cares about its people - its poor people, sick
people, old people.
Many of us already know this. And are doing something about
it.

Changing
someone's day could be the start of changing their life.
be bigger.
So here's the deal: Do something nice for someone in need and
write in about it ... I'll post it here (to inspire others) and
send you a "be bigger" bauble or pin. Including pictures
is even better!
- Go to Crafters
United and buy something or donate something. It's a
craft collective ... and all proceeds to go the Red Cross
Hurricane Relief. We've raised thousands already - it's amazing.
- Crafters
for Critters is the same deal, only they help animals
in need. So you get cool stuff and the money goes to benefit
cure furry things.
- Check out your local Red Cross.
They offer all kinds of classes - disaster relief, CPR ... whatever.
So when the next big thing happens, you might be able to actually
help. Especially if it happens near you. But all those relief
workers must be trained before they're allowed at disaster sites.
- Go to your closet. As
you look at each piece of clothing, ask yourself, "Is there
someone who needs this more than me?" Clothes that don't
fit, you just don't like that much ... it's often hard to part
with them, until you think "Is there someone who needs
this more than me?" Then leave somewhere it for homeless
people or go drop it off at a shelter.
- Now go to your kitchen
and do the same thing with stuff you don't have to cook. I know
you have crackers that have been sitting around for three months.
"Someday I'll eat them" ... someone needs them today.
- Like dogs? Animal shelters
have programs in which you hang out and walk some dogs. Dogs
get playtime, shelter gets relief ... everyone wins.
- There's a program here in which
we give manicures to women at a last-resort safehouse. In the
midst of hiding or getting sober, a manicure actually meant
something to these women. They got to feel pretty and pampered
for a few hours. That's just part of what LAWorks
is doing here in Los Angeles. If you email me about similar
groups in your area, I'll post 'em!
- Hell, just say "hello"
and smile at a homeless person. I'm not asking for your first
born.
I want to hear what you guys
do to make a difference. If we don't take care of each other, who
will? This guy??
